It’s never too late to right your wrongs, big or small.
Working as hard as I had been over the years, I had become disconnected from(失去联系的)the people who mattered most to me. I decided to spend a year reconnecting with my friends and relatives and making amends(补偿). I devoted myself to caring for what I called “my unfinished business”, which has helped me become a more attentive husband, father, son and friend —and a happier, more energetic person.
Now that I’ve had a good opportunity to revisit my past mistakes—and experience the rewards of fixing them—I’d like to share some of the lessons I have learned:
Have you lost touch with people who were important to you? Are there things you’ve done or not done that are in front of you? Are there people in your life you don’t know how much they meant to you? List your unfinished business and take action to deal with it.
Instead of trying to put an end to the cold war dividing your family, begin with a small thing you can control. Apologize to your brother for not attending his Super Bowl party. Respond to an e-mail you should have answered a week ago. Write a note or make a call.
No matter what the wrong is, the most important thing in making it right is your sincerity. If you reach out with a genuine (真诚的)heart, your friends will be glad to hear from you again.
This is the key to learning and growing. Keep a journal, or summarize what you’ve learned in e-mails to friends. The difficulty we face in dealing with our unfinished business can seem impossibly big, but the first step to clearing them can be simple: Again, write a note or make a phone call .Once you discover your fears and get over them, you’ll become a more complete and pleased person.

There's a huge power in knowing how to make adjustments(调整,调节) in life. In fact, it's possible to turn failure into success by making the right adjustments. The trick is in knowing where the adjustment is needed and how much.
We call people who have the ability to make the best life adjustments happy. And on the other hand we call people who refuse or neglect to make adjustments sador confused.
Whatever your stage in life, age or financial (经济的) level, everyone will face what I call the 3 C's. The 3 C's are changes, challenges and choices. The person who handles the 3 C's the best we call happy and well adjusted.
One obstacle many people trip over is assuming money will help them make the best life adjustments. Wrong! It may help in some ways, but even money won't help unless you have the knowledge and put in the effort. For instance, it is not hard to find wealthy people who find it hard to deal with the challenges, changes and choices of life.
So, what's one of the key factors of people who fail to live up to their potential(潜力)? They fail to make life adjustments when faced with changes, challenges or choices.
Here are 3 simple but powerful tips to help you make effective life adjustments when faced with the 3 C's or changes, challenges and choices.
Learn To Think With Your Eyes And Ears
When you learn how to think with your eyes we call that observation and when you learn how to think with your ears we call that hearing. Most people see but few people know how to observe. The difference between seeing and observing is like the difference between reading and studying.
The same goes with listening. It only requires ears to hear, but it often takes awareness and thought to listen. One factor in helping you to listen better is to hear not only what people say but what they don't say. Reading body language and voice change can help you listen between the lines. All these play an effective role in helping you to think with your eyes and ears.
Learn To Go With The Flow
The people who learn to make the best life adjustments develop the habit of going with the flow. For example, they refuse to worry too much about the small affairs and remain flexible to life changes. The best way to do that is to trust your instincts(直觉). The more you do that, the more they will work for you.
Worry tends to ruin your God-given instincts. Notice people who can go with the flow and you'll find a person with sharp instincts.
Be Prepared For Changes, Challenges And Choices
If you can keep an attitude of preparation you'll have the best chance of making effective life adjustments. What kind? The kind that can see you through problems, setbacks and challenges.
As the saying goes, “If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.” That's the best advice for anyone who wants to make the best life adjustments and win!
Title: 1.Makes The Best Adjustments Wins
Outlines | Supporting details |
Introduction | Failure can turn into success when the right adjustments are made. |
2. | 3C’s stand for changes, challenges and choices. And people goodat 3.3C’s are happy and well adjusted. |
Wrong 4. | Money 5.than your knowledge and effort will help you make the best life adjustments. |
Three tips | Learn to 6. and listen. * Different from seeing, observation means thinking with eyes. * 7.hearing, listening requires awareness andthought. |
Learn to go with the flow. * Adapting to life changes without being 8.about small stuff. *9.the habit of going with the flow by depending on your instincts. | |

A library is a place where a large collection of books are lined. However, quite different from traditional ones, a new library which opened last month in San Antonio, Texas, US is very special in the thing —there is not a single book in it.
In fact, the world’s first “bookless” library, known as BiblioTech, looks more like an Internet café—instead of bookshelves. It has iPads, laptops and desktop computers to use on site and 500 e-readers for members to borrow. Most importantly, there is no printed material, reported Time.
“Our digital library is stored in the cloud, so you don’t have to come in to get a book,” Laura Cole, BiblioTech’s special projects coordinator, told CNN. The library at the moment has a collection of 10,000 e-books and is trying to add more.
The idea of a bookless library no longer seems new since e-books have been around for quite some time. At the end of 2012, 23 percent of Americans aged 16 and older read e-books, up from 16 percent the year before. At the same time, the proportion(比例) of Americans who read a printed book fell from 72 percent to 67 percent.
“Not all libraries are going to be like us,” Nelson Wolff, a local official told CNN. “But we surely do hope it’s going to drive them to do so. The world is changing, and libraries can’t stay the same —if they want to stay connected with the changing world.”
Also, located in a low-income (低收入的) neighborhood where 40 percent of families don’t have a computer and half are not available(可获得的) to broadband Internet service, BiblioTech provides digital convenience to people who lack it.
All in all, the newly-born library, though young, may be promising in the future soon to come.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.
1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

Do American children still learn handwriting in school? In this age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out.
Steve Graham, a literacy professor at Vanderbilt University, says he has been hearing about the death of handwriting for the past fifteen years. However, a recent survey shows that it is still being taught by about 90% of teachers in grades one to three. 90% of teachers also say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. Professor Graham says that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. “And then when you look at how it’s taught, you have some teachers who are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for ten, fifteen minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for 60 to 70 minutes a day -- which really for handwriting is pretty much death.”
Many adults remember learning by copying letters over and over again. Today’s thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught by itself but be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility (清楚), which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency -- writing without having to think about it. The professor says fluency continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report about one-fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important anymore because of computers and voice recognition programs. But Professor Graham says word processing is rarely done in elementary school, especially in the early years. Even with high school teachers, we find that less than 50% of assignments are done via word processing or with word processing. And, in fact, if we added in taking notes and doing tests in class, most of the writing done in school is done by hand.
American children traditionally first learn to print, then to write in cursive (草体的), which connects the letters. But actually more than 75% of students choose to print their essay on the test rather than write in cursive.

Commercial advertisement was once thought of as a technique of the marketers to inform the potential buyers about the availability of certain products. It was seen more as a medium to inform the buyers rather than persuade them to buy. The present day marketers see advertisement as a medium to damage the image of their competitors and their products. This indeed, is an undesirable and an immoral practice. Instead of speaking about their own products, these marketers speak about the drawbacks (often without any basics) of the competing products.
People watching TV advertisements would notice that there has always been an advertisement war between the marketers of different consumer goods. A few such cases are given below.
1. Parachute Coconut Oil vs. V.V.D. Gold
Some time back, the producer of V.V.D Gold Coconut Oil claimed in their TV advertisement that only their products was superior and the one sold in blue colour bottles (the reference was to Parachute coconut oil) was suitable only for un-natural hair.
2. Tata Salt vs. Captain Cook
Tata salt was first iodised (碘处理) salt marketed by an Indian Company. It has been enjoying a good and steady market. Captain Cook, another producer of iodised salt, who entered the market later, had to adopt some strategy to get control of the market. The TV advertisement of Captain Cook stressed on ‘Free flow’ of their salt when transferred to a container. The producer of Tata Salt retaliated (报复) by saying that the claim of Captain Cook was a trick and those who were quality conscious should deal with it with caution.
3. Pepsi vs. Coco Cola
Coca Cola was selected as the official soft drink for the Wills World Cricket 1996. When the cricket series was on, the marketers of Pepsi constantly advertised on TV. Their advertisement gave the idea that the cricketers preferred only Pepsi and as a matter of fact there was nothing official about it.
4. Horlicks vs. Complan
Sometime back, the TV advertisement of Complan, a health drink directly attacked Horlicks, which has been in the market for several decades. The claim of Complan was that their brand (which according to them was Brand C) has a higher percentage of ingredients (材料) compared to Brand H (reference was nothing but to Horlicks).
The above examples clearly show how the technique of advertisement is misused by some marketers to ruin the image of their competitors. This, certainly, is not a healthy trend.
Any marketer should only speak about his products and not about his competitors’ products. The awareness of consumers has certainly increased over the years and they are no longer easily taken in. There are many consumer products like salt, oil shaving blades etc. But one thing for sure is that offering the same product in a different container will not make the product different.
Mass media like Radio, Television and newspaper should not allow advertisements that tell lies. Legal regulations, in this regard, should also be made stricter.

There are many destructive (破坏性的) forces when it comes to nature, which have destroyed whole cities and killed many people. They’re really terrible, but they occur somewhat often, and this is why you see so many charities these days which focus their efforts on helping people who have been affected by natural disasters.
While the world is a very beautiful place to live in, there will always be parts of the world where natural disasters happen more often than in other places, where properties and lives are destroyed. Only the people who live in the country where tsunamis and earthquakes as well as other disasters occur experience these, and we can only imagine the suffering that they go through.
For some people out there, the world is cruel, but they have no choice but to stay where they are. A lot of the time people simply cannot afford to move away, as they might not be able to get a job when they leave.
In 2004, there was a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. A tsunami is a large wave that towers hundreds of feet into the air, and covers whole areas when it comes crashing down on to dry land. This particular tsunami was caused by an earthquake that happened in the middle of the sea, shooting the water away from the ground and towards dry land. This tsunami actually reached thirty meters in height, and was one of the worst tidal waves the world has ever seen. Over 200,000 people were hurt in the disaster.
In 2005, we also saw a hurricane happened in the United States. This hurricane was known as hurricane Katrina, and is perhaps the worst in the history of the world. It happened in 2005 and destroyed millions of properties in the area. It also took the lives of nearly 2,000 American people. It was known that for ten days, the wind swept through the area, meaning the most powerful country in the world became helpless in their attempts to save the people who were affected by the hurricane.
Finally, in 2008 we saw yet another natural disaster. This time it was a cyclone (旋风), which is similar to a hurricane but happens in a circular motion (圆周运动). This cyclone Nargis had been one of the strongest to have ever occurred, reaching a death toll of nearly 150,000 people.
All of these were terrible disasters that were unavoidable.

Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.
As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大学预修课)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(学分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.
Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Stay positive , work hard and remember to have fun!

Some people think that the Internet is a necessary part of our getting an education, but others blame it for making people addicted (上瘾). This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.
One of the advantages of the Internet is that one can find all the information on it
with ease(轻易,毫不费劲). Internet portals (入口) like "YAHOO" and "AltaVista" have been created to help us do so. With an Internet connection at home, one has almost no need to go to a library, and this can save a lot of time. Another advantage is that we can communicate with almost everyone over the Net. Email is much cheaper and faster than the normal mail.
On the other hand, the disadvantages are a serious problem for today’s world. The Internet has led to a new disease: Internet addiction. Many students who used to work hard on their studies now spend all their time online, chatting and doing other worthless things, and wasting a lot of money in Internet cafes. In extreme(极端的) cases teens are even lured (引诱) into doing things that are improper and even illegal (不合法的), such as making videos for adults.
The Internet is part of our lives now, but we still have to learn to avoid the dangers that come with it. We should remember that it’s only a source of information, and not a way to search for true friendship.
