Astronomers(天文学家) have always wondered if life exists beyond Earth. Scientists have used technology and instruments to study it for many times. If it does, our neighbor Mars is the most likely place to find it.
Mars is a planet of wild extremes. It has the largest dust storms, the deepest and longest valley(峡谷), the highest mountain, and the largest volcano(火山) known in our solar system! But to most scientists, the biggest question is whether life is, or was, possible on the planet.
Advances in technology have allowed scientists to match robots with a variety of tools. Then they send them to study Mars. These scientific instruments have been able to discover information that life is possible there. For example, one of the most important requirements for life, the existence of some form of water, has been discovered in several areas of Mars. A large amount of ice is under the surface and also frozen in the polar caps(极地冰冠) year-round. In 2015, scientists found that liquid water exists on Mars's surface. But will this finding lead to the discovery of life on the Red Planet? We're still waiting to find out and we have confidence to get the answer in the near future.

You may have heard of the popular saying, “Practice makes perfect.” But have you ever wondered whether it's really true? Does practice always make perfect?
Sometimes practice does make perfect. Take a math test for example. If you know you're going to have a math test in a week, you can keep doing math exercises before the test. If you get a full mark on your test, that's perfect and you can say the practice helped get you there.
However, in some other fields of life, practice doesn't always make perfect. It doesn't mean that practice is useless. Sometimes it just means that there's no such thing as "perfect in a certain field. For example, if you play sports or a musical instrument, there are no perfect games or perfect shows. It all depends on what you consider to be perfect."
Even if practice doesn't always make perfect, it almost always makes you better than you were before practicing. The more you practice something, the better you are at it.
1.The writer takes a math test for example to ________.
A.explain what is perfect B.encourage us to practice less
C.show practice can help us a lot D.make us believe nothing is perfect
2.Why doesn't practice make perfect sometimes?
A.Because practice is useless. B.Because there isn't a certain standard.
C.Because life is difficult for us. D.Because we can never get a full mark.
3.What does the writer talk about in the text?
A.Practice never makes perfect. B.It's easy and fun to be perfect.
C.How to practice for perfection? D.Does practice always make perfect?

Do you wonder why your classmates always get higher marks than you? If you think it is because they are cleverer than you, you are really wrong, according to American authors Wood Smethurst and william Luckie. In their book, Study Power, they say that successful students are not cleverer than others and that they just know the best ways to study for exams.
“The best way to study is to study actively, say the authors. You must ask yourself questions as you work. Asking yourself questions will help you remember information better and faster. To study better you also need to make the best use of your time: When you study, the authors say, only go on for 20 minutes at a time. If you study for longer you will start thinking about other things and not learn anything. The authors also tell students to listen to everything their teachers say in class and write it down.
The authors say that everyone can get high marks if they learn actively and follow their tips.

I always wondered how people would behave if I tried to come near to a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a noisy mall. I have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday, I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large cupboard. After buying in one of the large shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot but my phone was dead.
I then asked the shop assistant who had just sold me the cupboard to ring the number of my driver for me and she replied that it was the shop rule that they cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.
I got out of the shop onto the busy street in front and came near to a young mother with her two kids to ask her for help. As soon as I said, "Excuse me, madam", she grabbed both her kids and ran. I felt embarrassed.
I stood there, wondering how many times I had behaved like the young mum. I stood there in the busy street with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their faces.
I saw a man pretty shabbily dressed. I thought maybe he was too poor to have a phone. He seemed to have noticed me and I just stopped him expecting him to rush past. My request escaped the lips. He immediately called the number of my driver and waited till my car came to be sure I was picked up, and he turned around before I could thank him and was gone. I was surprised by his kindness and hope I will do the same to strangers who try to catch my attention from now on.

A.体面地 B.衣衫褴褛地 C.休闲地
4.Who gave the writer a hand at last?
A.The shop asistant. B.The shabbily-dressed man. C.The mother with two kids.
5.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Helping strangers is easier said than done.
B.Experience is better gained through practice.
C.Do to others what you would like others to do to you.

Have you ever wondered what goes through your mind when you choose where to sit in a new classroom? Or in a waiting room full of strangers? Or on a bus? Researchers have found out some interesting facts.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we prefer to sit closer to people like ourselves. Girls sit by girls and boys sit by boys. Adults sit together and young people choose another young person to sit near. But it goes further than this. We even choose to sit near someone who looks like us. People with glasses are more likely to sit near other people with glasses. People with long hair sit closer to other people with long hair.
We seem to believe that people with similar habits or hobbies will share similar attitude and we are more likely to be accepted by people like ourselves or even, we think we may be safer with people who look like us. Sometimes that’s true but it's a pity if we always stick to the same people, the same group. The danger in always staying in our comfort zone (舒适区)is that we just recycle the same opinions, the same tastes and the same ideas. We lose the chance to learn something new, find out about interesting things, hear funny stories and discover difference.
When we always stick to the same people, how can we ever break down the barriers which prevent us from getting to know people with different ideas? And how can we avoid the ignorance (无知),which too often leads to prejudice (偏见) and even fear? If instead you want to live in a society that opens to changes and new things and different opinions, be the cat among the pigeons.
Move out of your comfort zone. Go and sit next to someone different. And don't just sit there in silence. Say hello. Ask a question. Start a conversation. That’s how we make friends. That’s how we learn about people. That’s how we open our minds to new ideas. That's how we live an exciting life.
1.From the passage, we know that people prefer sitting by someone who________.
A.is like themselves
B.has a sense of humor
C.is open-minded
D.lives an exciting life
2.People like staying in their comfort zone because they may________.
A.remain comfortable and special
B.be accepted easily and feel safe
C.find out more interesting things
D.discover differences among themselves
3.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell us just to be ourselves in social life.
B.To introduce ways to learn about the world.
C.To explain how people communicate with others.
D.To encourage us to meet people of different kinds.
