As we all know sewing-machine(缝纫机) repair is one of the fastest growing businesses in the world today. Newspapers, women’s magazines, high schools and colleges are all encouraging millions of American women to do their own sewing, not only to make their own shirts and sweaters, but also to make nice clothes for their husbands, sons, or boyfriends. The lattes figures(数字) show that over 89 million American women, because of the high costs of ready-to-wear clothing are now making almost all of their families’ clothes. Most of these women get great satisfaction from making the family clothes on their own sewing machines. So it is natural that the demand(要求) for excellent service of sewing machines is growing.
Think of it! 89 million or more sewing machines, not including another 10 million sewing machines in schools of all kinds, need service at least once a year, and quite possibly four or more times each year. I know some women who return their sewing machines to repairmen time after time to get them fixed properly. I’ve seen sewing machines come out of repair shops in worse condition than they were when they went in.
So I’ve decided to write an introduction book to sewing-machine repair and teach people how to repair their own sewing machines at home. It’s not that difficult. In the book, I will teach you everything you need to know about how to repair your sewing machine.
1.The author wrote the passage to________.
A.teach women to repair their sewing machines. |
B.explain his or her purpose in writing the book |
C.introduce the reasons for doing one’s own sewing |
D.tell us that sewing-machine repair is a fast-growing business |
2.American women make clothes by themselves because________.
A.they cannot buy the clothes they see in magazines |
B.their husbands or boyfriends want them to do so |
C.ready-to-wear clothes cost a great deal of money |
D.they can’t get great satisfaction from buying clothes |
3.We learn from the passage that sewing machines________.
A.aren’t very difficult to be repaired |
B.cannot work well after one year |
C.don’t easily get broken |
D.need service 4 times a month |

English, as we all know, is considered as the universal language. It is spoken all over the world. However, you will also notice that people all over the world are using different types of English. Let’s take a closer look at these two popular types: UK and US English. Even if both types of English are wildly used, there are some differences that will be worth knowing to find out the type of English that you are using.
US English is what we know as the American English which is wildly used in the United States. UK English, on the other hand, is known as the British English. Some also call it the BBC English since it is the English used by British reporters, and another name for it is the Queen’s English.
In terms of vocabulary, some words in US English may mean something different in the UK English. For example, the word biscuit for the British means baked sweet or salty cake that is hard when baked and softened over time; while in the US it is a quick bread served with salty foods.
With regards to pronunciation, American English is more nasal (鼻音的). Stress (重音) is also another difference to consider. Just like in the word princess, British stress the second syllable (音节) while Americans stress the first.
Spelling is another area of difference. American English spelling is more simple. Example of which includes, color for the US and colour for the UK, same goes with honor and honour. The doubling of letters in words is another good example. It will be traveler in the US and traveller in the UK. The English language is changing fast, thanks to the rapid progress of technology. We all have a rapid choice: we can either bury our heads in the sand and spend the rest of our lives wishing Shakespeare were alive and well. Or we can embrace (拥抱) the new English, enter into the spirit of the Internet age called Weblish.
“You can’t avoid it,for the simple reason that whenever a new variety of language comes along,it inevitably (不可避免的) impacts(冲击)on the language as a whole.” says Dr. David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics(语言学)at the University of Wales in Bangor, whose book Language and the Internet has just been published.
The trouble with keeping up with the new English is not so much that there are so many new words but that the old words no longer mean what we thought they did. In the past, if someone said they did not have Windows, you would have to suppose they lived in a cave. These days,it is probably because they use a Mac(which is a computer, not a rain coat). Spam is as disliked as it ever was ,but it once meant an unappetizing(引不起食欲的)canned meat.It now stands for unwanted “junk” email. Spellings are changing, too. Not only is text-messaging playing “hvc wth vrbs” (havoc(混乱)with verbs), but the conventions of email communication place little emphasis on “perfect speaking”.
Weblish loves to see nouns happily become verbs(“please bookmark this site”),and verbs become nouns (“Send me the download”). Verbs and prepositions are regularly thrown together to become new nouns or adjectives(e.g. dial-up, logon, print-on-demand, pull-down, upload), while others are created from simply pairing nouns: cyberspace, Etl, hyperlink, netspeak.
1.The best title of this passage would be ______.
A.Keep Up with the Latest Weblish | B.Keep Up with the Latest Development |
C.Newly Invented English Words | D.Technology and English |
2.We can infer(推断)from the first paragraph that ______.
A.Some people wish Shakespeare were still alive |
B.people may have different attitudes towards Weblish |
C.all people welcome Weblish |
D.Weblish is not popular among people |
3.The author thinks the main difficulty for people in keeping up with Weblish is that ______.
A.old words have new meanings |
B.there are so many new words |
C.the technology is changing too fast |
D.Weblish words are full of spelling mistakes |
4.Dr. David Crystal would probably agree that ______.
A.people should not accept Weblish |
B.Weblish can cause misunderstandings among people |
C.Weblish will destroy the English language |
D.people should know something about Weblish |
