Venus is close to the earth. It is the second planet from the sun. The earth is the third planet from the sun. Venus is similar (相似的) to the earth in size and mass (质量). It is often described as the earth’s “sister”.
Scientists have been learning about Venus for a long time. First they looked at Venus through telescopes (望远镜). But Venus is covered with thick clouds. Scientists could not see Venus well through the clouds. So they made guesses about it.
For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals too. But they didn’t know for sure.
Then scientists found a way to learn more about Venus. In the 1960s, they began sending probes (航天探测器) to Venus. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. They found out many things too. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists.
The scientists learned a lot from the probes. First they learned that most of their guesses were not right. And they learned that Venus is very hot.
After that, scientists knew they could not send people to Venus. But they still wanted to know more about it. So they sent new probes. These new probes took great pictures of the planet. The pictures showed that Venus has plains (平原) and mountains! And in some ways, Venus looks like the earth.

任务一:简要回答下列问题。
1.How are Venus and the earth similar?
________________________________________
2.Why is it hard to see Venus well through a telescope?

B. A storybook.
C. A science magazine.
D. A medical dictionary.

The solar system has eight planets. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The Planets are all round, like balls. The planets all go around the sun.
Mercury is the closest to the sun. It is very hot on Mercury. The planets that are far away from the sun are very cold. Venus is between Mercury and the Earth. It is sometimes called Earth’s “sister planet” because they have almost the same size and shape. The Earth is the planet where we live. From space, the Earth looks blue because it has so much water. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Saturn is known for having rings around it. Uranus was the first planet discovered with a telescope. We can see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn with our eyes, however, to see Uranus, we need a telescope. Neptune is the 8th planet in our solar system. The planet is farthest from the sun.
Probes (探测仪) go into space and take pictures of the planets. We learn a lot from these pictures. If you could send a probe to any planet, where would you send it?
1.What goes around the sun?
A. Moon. B. Stars. C. Spaceships. D. Planets.
2.Which planet is Earth’s “sister planet”?
A. Mercury. B. Venus. C. Jupiter. D. Saturn.
3.Some planets are far away from the sun so they are very ______.
A. cold B. hot C. small D. bright
4.What does the underlined word “telescope” mean in Chinese?
A. 潜水镜 B. 显微镜 C. 高台 D. 望远镜
5.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Earth is the second closest planet to the sun.
B. Jupiter is larger than any other planet in our solar system.
C. Uranus is famous for having rings around it.
D. We can’t see Mars with our eyes.

根据学过的课文,判断正(T)误(F)
The Earth is a planet and it goes around the Sun.Seven other planets also go around the Sun.None of them has an environment with air,so people and things cannot grow. The Sun and its planets are called the solar system. The solar system is a small part of our galaxy.
The stars we see at night are the suns in other solar systems. There are more than 200 billion stars in our galaxy, called the Milky Way,and our Sun is only one of them.
But scientists have discovered many other galaxies in the universe. They are a long way away and their light has travelled for many years to reach us.It is hard to understand how large the universe is.
Scientists have sent lots of spacecraft to look at other planets in our solar system, and some spacecraft have gong beyond the solar system. However,no one has discovered any life in space yet.
But why has no one from other planets sent us a message?Have they tried to send information to us?With so many stars in the universe, are we alone,or is there life out there in space? We don’t know...yet.
1.The Sun is one of the Earth planets.
2.There is more than one galaxy in our solar system.
3..There are more than 200 billion stars in the Milky Way.
4..Scientists have found life on other planets.
5.They’ve received no messages from space.

Our planet(星球), the Earth, is becoming more and more crowed and the environment is badly polluted. Some people think that we will have no places to live in the future. Don’t be panic(惊慌的). Recently some scientists believe that we will live on Mars(火星) by the year 2100. Here is what life will be like on Mars in 2100.
Tranasport(交通) will be much better. It takes months to get to Mars today. But in 2100, the spaceship can travel at half the speed(速度) of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars.
Because none of us can live without food, water or air, scientists will develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce(生产) food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is still no answer now.
Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. Living in a large building with 10 bedrooms in even possible for people. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we will have more spare(空闲的) time.
There will probably be no schools on Mars. Every student will have a computer to study at home. Every student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”. It’s really interesting, isn’t it?

Every two years, the World Wildlife Fund(世界野生动物基金会) gives the Living Planet Report-a report on Earth’s health. The report for this year came out on Oct 30. It says that the number of animals like mammals (like elephants, lions and tigers), birds and fish falls by about 60 percent from 1970.
We are losing wildlife day by day. Humans should take this seriously, Vox Media said. It also plays an important part in our life. For example, a 2017-study said the number of flying insects(昆虫) fell by 75 percent in 30 years. Insects help plants have new seeds(种子). Without them, we will have a broken ecosystem. The report also shows that Earth has lost about half of its shallow water coral(浅水珊瑚) in the past 30 years. One-fifth of the Amazon rainforest disappeared in just 50 years.
This is mainly because of human activity. Climate(气候) change, losing living environment, environmental pollution and endless killing are some of the biggest reasons.
All over the world, people are cutting down forests, using too much water from rivers and putting waste into the sea. There is no human activity on only a quarter of the earth.
We need to find ways to meet the needs of our growing number of people, the WWF said. Different countries should work together to help the wildlife out of danger. Most importantly, humans cannot live by themselves in the world without other animals. To help the endangered wildlife is to help humans themselves.
1.What is the Living Planet Report about?
A.Earth’s health. B.Some kinds of animals. C.Human activity.
2.The underlined word “ecosystem” in Paragraph Two means _____ .
A.经济体制 B.循环系统 C.生态系统
3.Which of the following is NOT the reason for losing wildlife?
A.People kill elephants for ivory.
B.Factories pour dirty water into the river.
C.Students plant trees on Tree Planting Day.
4.We can learn from the passage that_____ .
A.wildlife plays an important role in the ecosystem
B.there is human activity in every part of the world
C.the earth lost about half of the rainforest in 50 years
5.The writer mainly wants to_____ in this article.
A.tell people what WWF’s job is
B.ask people to work together for a better world
C.show how serious the environmental problems are
