Today, whether or not you follow the latest trends, one’s fashion and choice of dress is a reflection of one’s individual style and tastes. Can you still remember how you dressed at the start of China’s opening-up? Today’s program is one of a special series commemorating (纪念) the 30th anniversary of reform and opening-up in China. In these two episodes we focused on fashion and style and were honored to invite two special guests to join us in studio—Ms. Zhang Ling from Raffles-BICT Inter-national College and Alex from Esquire magazine.
When we talk about fashion, color is absolutely crucial. A color can reflect the mood of an individual person or the spiritual temperament(性情) of entire society or age. Mrs. Zhang and Alex talked about the colors which have left the greatest impression on them. In the 1960s and 70s, blue and grey were the dominant colors at the time and people had limited choices to dress up. But fast forward to the present, you will find no difficulty in choosing from array(大批) of vivid colors in the market.
We also gave our guests a list of keywords—traditional brands, jeans, DIY, international brands, personal dress for them to choose from in order to represent the fashion of their generation. We find out that for every keyword our guest chose, there was a special story behind it. Some of the stories brought us back to old times—we even brought some vintage(古老的) clothing from the 60s and 70s up on stage and invited some audience members to try them on.
When we mention fashion, we must mention brand. With increasing disposable(可自由使用的) income and purchasing power of the Chinese, many luxury brands have flocked into China. However, you could imagine in 1980s, when the first inter-national brand came to China, it unveiled(展示) a fashion storm among the Chinese.
1. China’s opening-up dates back to _______.
A.the 1960s | B.the 1970s | C.the 1980s | D.the 1990s |
2. All of the following EXCEPT _______ are keywords in representing the fashion of our generation.
A.traditional brands | B.international brands |
C.personal dress | D.special stories |
3. The fact that many luxury brands have flocked into China shows that _______.
A.China has given up its own culture |
B.Chinese have been tired of array of vivid colors in the markets |
C.Chinese have increased their disposable income and purchasing power |
D.China has grown tired of its traditional brands |

On December 22, 2016 I landed in the land of the “American Dream.” 1. Here is one of the things I’ve struggled with during my almost one year in the States.
2. My uncle and aunt joked that I brought rain from Saigon to America. Saigon, where I come from, is the old name of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Vietnam is a tropical country where it rains most of the year. Before going to the U.S., actually, I had no idea what to expect about its weather, but the big rain on my arrival gave me the first expectation of what the weather here might be like.
California is known for having a great climate — more sunshine, cooler in summer and warmer in winter. 3. However, having been here for a pretty long while now, I have experienced various forms of climate in California.
4. Most of the time I was living in Silicon Valley, where the weather is a bit colder than where I study in Orange County. But I was really surprised to find chill-to-the-bone weather in San Francisco — a big shift from Silicon Valley in only about an hour’s drive. How strange!
5. The worst is that I get n runny nose whenever I wake up in the morning. Because I am allergic to the cold and windy weathers, I keep sneezing badly, and even more badly if I get caught in the cold. I think that my body needs more time to get used to this climate, but as many people said, I am luckier to be in California where I don’t have to fight with extreme weathers as in other stales.
A. I am sensitive to weather change.
B. Such strange weather has affected my health.
C. So the amount of rain this year is considered unusual.
D. LAX airport in California welcomed me with a big rain.
E. So I quickly get used lo the unchangeable climate in California.

“It is one of the few bright spots in the Chinese economy,” says Zeng Ming. He is talking about ecommerce. Mr. Zeng, the chief strategy officer for Alibaba, a giant Chinese Internet firm, predicts that digital transactions on his firm's platforms will top 1 trillion yuan($159 billion) this year—more than Amazon's and eBay's combined. That is a bold claim, but consider what happened on Singles Day.
Invented a few years ago by students and seized upon by digital marketers, this festival for lonely hearts falls annually on the 11th day of the 11th month(since 1 is the loneliest number). It is like St Valentine's Day, only worse. Singletons show each other with tender gifts: a barrage of pearls; a storm of sweets.
This November 11th they spent a surprising 19 billion yuan on Alibaba's online platforms—a fourfold increase on a year ago, and more than double what Americans spent online last Cyber Monday(the Monday after Thanksgiving, when retailers urge Americans to shop online). About 100 million purchases were logged, accounting for 80% of the packages shipped that day. Couriers(快递员) were buried in parcels.
So life is good for China's etailers. Then? Not exactly. The number of digital marketers is increasing and online sales are booming. Consumers are enjoying lower prices, better service and more variety. The problem? The pressure on profits in Chinese ecommerce is worse than in America, reckons Elinor Leung of CLSA, a broker. “Almost no one makes money,” she says.
The fiercest battles are being fought between online retailers and their bricksandmortar(实体的) rivals. Dangdang, a firm that resembles Amazon, and 360buy, another online retailer, have cut prices fiercely. Tencent, a cashrich online giant known for its instantmessaging software, is splashing out to win market share. 360buy has also just raised $400 millon from investors to do the same. But it is unclear how much longer such firms can burn through capital.
1.What's the best title of this passage?
A.The Ambition of Alibaba
B.Fierce Competition between Retailers
C.A New Festival for the Singles
D.Chinese Booming Ecommerce
2.According to Zeng Ming, this year Alibaba will ________.
A.outweigh Amazon and eBay in worldwide influence
B.rank top among all the Internet firms
C.have more than 159 billion dollars' sale
D.create another sales miracle just like the one on Singles Day
3.How many packages were shipped on November 11th from Alibaba's online platforms?
A.About 80 million. B.About 100 million.
C.About 125 million. D.About 180 million.
4.What's the author's attitude towards online retailers in China?
A.Optimistic. B.Concerned.
C.Sympathetic. D.Indifferent.
