Now it is the time to set your resolutions. As you head into almost a whole year, your first step is to believe you can do it. Here’s how to prepare yourself effectively.
1.
Eating better and exercising more are all nice ideas, but they’re too general and don’t give you a plan of action. People often lack motivation when the problem is really a lack of clarity. If you want to eat better, be specific: Resolve to add a fruit or vegetable to your lunch every day, limit fast food to once per week, or have dessert once a week.
Make it possible
2.. To eat better, put that bowl of fruit right next to your lunch bag, so you grab an apple or orange every day. To exercise more, you might want to run more. But if you’re a night person, don’t make it harder on yourself by trying to run every morning before work.3.
Allow yourself to fail
Everyone has occasional slips.4.. 71% of successful resolvers say their first failure strengthened their efforts. Learn to refuse something annoying under high pressure. Even people who don’t like apple pie still eat it when offered politely. Instead, say “No, thanks.” If you do slip, focus on getting back on track, not the slip.
Set yourself up for success
Do you try to stay off your phone? Get it out of your bedroom by using a standard alarm clock. One alarm clock only costs $6 now. If you want to limit sweets, get them out of your house. Do you want to reduce breaks?5..
A.Speak it to your friends
B.Make it as specific as possible
C.Stay away from your work’s rest room
D.Instead, do it after you finish your work

Brush turkeys are heading back into urban Sydney areas, according to an environmental expert, and there is not much people can do about it.
The Australian brush turkey has “big feet”. They damage people’s beloved backyards by raking up dirt to make large nests which can sometimes hold up to 56 eggs in one mound(土堆). This is because one male brush turkey can breed(交配繁殖) with up to six females who can lay up to 12 eggs.
The population of brush turkeys in Australia was severely reduced along the east coast in the 1960s after coming close to extinction during the Depression as they were easy to hunt for food. As a result, they become a protected species in the 1970s which made it illegal to shoot them.
“In the 1980s, they took over Brisbane, and Sydney is about 10 years behind what happened up here,” Professor Darryl Jones, deputy director of the Environmental Futures Research Institute at Griffith University, said. “Once they get into the city they work out there’s a lot of food and they have a fair bit of protection.”
While brush turkeys have cultural significance in Queensland, they can be annoying for many in Sydney. Former Central Coast resident(居民) Paul told 702 ABC Sydney that he had “an ongoing battle for years” with brush turkeys that built nests in his garden.
“We had plague proportions(瘟疫之灾) when we lived on the Central Coast. I was trying to grow food and vegetables but I had to give up,” he said. “They just completely dug them up. I was fighting a losing battle.”
But Sydney resident Joy thinks differently. “Brush turkeys are part of nature,” she said. “I’ve been able to successfully have a flower garden and a vegetable garden and have brush turkeys wander through the yard. The way I’ve done it is just to put sticks in the ground around the plants. I haven’t had any problems at all and people need to think of ways to overcome these problems rather than kill animals.”
1.What’s one characteristic of brush turkeys?
A.They are afraid of humans. B.They often build mounds to hide eggs.
C.They usually live in coastal areas. D.A female lays a dozen eggs each time.
2.Why were brush turkeys nearly dying out during the Depression?
A.They were over-hunted for their meat. B.They couldn’t find enough food.
C.They were hated and hunted by people. D.Their natural habitats were destroyed.
3.What troubled Paul was that_____.
A.a plague broke out on the Central Coast.
B.he was sometimes attacked by brush turkeys.
C.his garden was messed up by brush turkeys.
D.he had no place to grow food and vegetables.
4.What is Joy’s opinion of brush turkeys?
A.They do much harm to gardeners.
B.Their number should be controlled.
C.Sydney is suitable for them to survive.
D.People should live in harmony with them.

It was a cold night in Washington, D. C., and I was heading back to the hotel when a man approached me. he asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I’d read the signs in the hotel: “Don’t give money to beggars.” So I shook my head and kept walking.
The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn't have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. Back home, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage Daily News. All of a sudden, I thought of Bean’s Café, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, which feeds hundreds of hungry Alaskans every day. why not try to get all my readers to plant a row of vegetables in their gardens and donate them to Bean’s Cafe?
In April 1995, the Garden Writers Association of America held their annual meeting in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage’s program, Plant a Row for Bean's became Plant a Row For The Hungry. The original idea was to have every member of the Garden Writers Association of America write or talk about planting a row for the hungry sometime during the month of April.
Garden editor Joan Jackson, backed by The San Jose Mercury News and California’s nearly year-round growing season, raised more than 30,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables the first year, and showed how the program could really work. Today program continues to boom and grow.
1.Why didn’t the writer give money to the man?
A. Because he was afraid that the man was a liar
B. Because he had no money on him at that time
C. Because he was in a hurry to get back to his hotel
D. Because he didn’t know that man
2.What inspired the writer to think of the program to help the poor?
A. A beggar B. A hotel
C. the Garden Writers Association D. Bean’s Café
3.How does the author feel about the effect of the Plan a Row program?
A. It’s discouraging B. It’s satisfying
C. It’s doubtful D. It’s challenging
4.Which might be the best title of the passage?
A. Everybody Can Make a Big Difference to the World
B. A Campaign to Remove Poverty
C. Plant a Row for the Hungry
D. How to Help People in Need
