The magnitude 7.9 quake struck Sichuan province on May 12 at around noontime, which may have increased the human death toll because many people were at school, and the school buildings turned out to be not firm enough to collapse because of poor construction. More than 69,000 people have been confirmed dead so far, and more than 374,000 injured, with fears of further disasters because several lakes created by rockfall dams may give way and cause sudden flooding.

The team operated 25 broadband seismograph (地震仪) stations in this region of western Sichuan for more than a year. "Nobody was thinking there would be a major earthquake in that area," Royden says. "This earthquake was quite unusual, and may have involved a simultaneously(同时发生的) severe break of two separate but neighboring faults," she continued.
The region is extremely unusual geologically, Royden says, because of the very steep slopes at the boundary between the Sichuan Basin to the east and the Tibetan plateau to the west. The altitude rises sharply by about 3,500 meters (more than two miles) over a span of only about 50 kilometers (about 30 miles).
The area where the quake occurred is part of the boundary between two of the Earth's structural plates, where the Indian and Asian plates meet in an ongoing collision that has created the Himalayan mountains and the Tibetan plateau. But in central and eastern Tibet, unlike most other areas of continental collision, much of the movement of crust(地壳) is hidden from view. Instead of thickening the entire crust by folding and faulting, the surface of the eastern Tibetan plateau is not deformed(变形的) and is being lifted upward by thickening of a weak crustal layer more than 15 km below the surface.

On Dec 22, China became the third country in the world after Japan and the US to have a carbon dioxide(CO2)monitoring satellite.
Named Tansat, as "tan" is the Chinese word for carbon, the satellite moves around Earth at about 700 kilometers above the ground. There, it can “see” clearly how much CO2 there is in the air and how it is moving.
How is TanSat able to do that?When sunlight travels through the air, the CO2 molecules(分子)take in different colors from the light. The satellite then looks at these colors to find out how much CO2 there is in the air.
“The TanSat has very good vision(视力), and it can tell changes in CO2 as small as 1 percent, ” said Yin Zeng shan, one of the satellite's designers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, according to Xinhua News Agency.
But there is a question. When CO2 can already be measured from ground stations, why do we need a satellite that does the same thing?
The truth is that they don't do exactly the same thing. According to Zhang Peng, vice director of the National Satellite Meteorological Center, the data from ground stations is limited and it does not cover the ocean area, which takes up more than 70 petcent of Earth's surface.
But TanSat has solved the problem. It has a bird's eye view of the Earth, covering both the land and the ocean. It can also change its mode(模式)and position when looking at the ocean area because the water can reflect light. This light may change the data if its normal mode is used.
More importantly, China is now working on its goal of producing less CO, , starting from 2030 or earlier. To meet that goal, it will need to keep track of every bit of progress that it's making.
And with TauSat, China will have first-hand, detailed data of CO2 emissions in different areas, provinces and parts of the ocean, no longer having to use data from Japan and the US.

After decades of playing catch-up with the U.S. and Russian space programs, China did something neither nation nor any other had done this December: land a spaceship on the dark side of the moon.
Strictly speaking, of course, the moon has no dark side. But because of the way it orbits Earth, our natural satellite shows us only one side - the other is hidden from our view. No one even saw the far side until 1959, when the Soviet Luna 3 spaceship flew around for a look and sent back photos. No astronaut or spaceship went there until this December, when the China National Space Agency (CNSA) launched a 2,500-pound lander called Chang’e-4 to the southern end of the lunar far side.
Chang’e-4 operated a small rover (探测车) to survey the geography there for the first time ever. By examining the geography of its landing area, Chang’e-4 could solve longstanding puzzles about the moon, including how it formed 4.5 billion years ago. Chang’e-4 also carried a very small ―lunar biosphere (生态圈) ‖ containing silkworm eggs and a tiny greenhouse designed to grow potatoes in order to study the growth of the seeds on the moon.
Besides Chang’e-4, China plans to launch Chang’e-5 in 2019. Its mission will be to gather moon rocks using an orbiter, a lander or collector, an ascent stage (上升器) and a capsule that will separate from the orbiter and return the rocks to the earth. ―With these missions, the Chinese will have shown complete mastery of flight in the space between the earth and the moon,‖ said Paul Spudis, an experienced lunar researcher based in Houston.
CNSA has already outlined ideas for Chinese astronauts to follow the robots to the moon. Pei Zhaoyu, deputy director of CNSA’s Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center, told that China plans a permanent robotic lunar station in about 10 years and suggested a human presence on the moon another decade or so after that. Spudis said China’s ambitious Chang’e-4 and Chang’e-5 missions should send human’s plans for lunar return into rapid development.
