In this world, in many cases, a lot of same things can be united together. Also, many opposite things cannot be united by many people. But there is always a chance to unite two different things in one work. The following passage will tell you more about the possibility of combining painting and poetry.
Perhaps, it is not a new idea that a great work can be created by combining paintings and poems. In this case, we can unite both things in two ways. The first way is to make the poem as the main inspiration for the painting. It is also possible to write a poem after looking at a painting.
What about the next idea to combine painting and poetry? Well, we can combine both of them on a canvas. You can paint an oil painting on it and then write down the poem on that canvas. I do not know whether this kind of idea has been used for years. But this is quite a great new idea for me. It will make more people love painting and poetry at the same time. You will not need to read the poem on plain white cloth anymore.
A poem is a good way to represent a story or a thought. It is usually not too long and not easy to be understood literally (照字面意义). It is a series of words arranged in stanza (诗节) and lines with rhyme, which are quite changeable. Therefore, combining it with another type of art (such as painting) would be very good. You can get the message of the poem through the colors on the canvas. All you need to do is to use your creativity to make a painting with the right color and with great words on it.
1.The underlined word “canvas” in Paragraph 3 probably means ____.
A. a wall of a building B. a piece of paper
C. cloth for painting D. the screen of a computer
2.What can be inferred from the passage about painting and poetry?
A. Painting and poetry are so alike that they can be united.
B. Poetry can inspire us to paint and the opposite is also true.
C. Painting and poetry have been recently combined together.
D. The author created the idea of combining painting and poetry.
3.According to the passage, a poem usually has all of the following features EXCEPT ________.
A. not being too long B. being representative
C. having deep meanings D. having fixed forms

As many as one in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss, according to researchers.
They say the problem is growing.
Teenagers really don’t pay attention to how much noise they are exposed (暴露) to, Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston told Reuters. “Often people won’t notice it, but even slight hearing loss may affect language development,” said Shargorodsky, one of the researchers.
The study compared surveys from the early 1990s and the mid-2000s. Each included a few thousand teenagers. In the first survey, about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss. Some 15 years later, that number had risen by a third, to nearly 20 percent.
“This certainly is big news,” said Alison Grimes, an ear doctor. Hearing loss is very common in old people, Grimes said, but she added that it was worrying to see it happen in the younger age group.
In babies and young children, hearing problems are known to slow language development. The science is less clear for teenagers, but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could affect learning, said Grimes,.
The reasons for the rise are still unclear. When researchers asked teenagers about noise exposure – on the job, at school or from activities, for example – the teenagers didn’t report any change. But Shargorodsky said that might not be true. “We knew from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure – they underestimate (低估) it.” Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player, for example. “There is a difference between what we think is loud and what is harmful to the ear,” said Grimes.
Although it’s not clear that the MP3 players cause teenagers’ hearing loss, Grimes said it was still a good idea to turn down the sound and take short breaks from listening.
1.According to the researchers, in a US class of 40 students, about ____ students have some degree of hearing loss.
A. one B. five C. six D. eight
2.Which of the following statements is true according to the article?
A. Slight hearing loss does not influence learning.
B. Only a few old people have hearing problems.
C. Hearing problems can slow language development.
D. Noise exposure is clearly noticed by teenagers.
3.About hearing loss, it can be inferred that ________.
A. the reasons for the rise have been found B. MP3 players are to blame
C. listening to loud music may be a cause D. noise is the main reason
4.The article was written to ______.
A. warn teenagers that loud music might be harmful
B. explain what kinds of noises might affect studies
C. suggest that teenagers shouldn’t listen to loud music
D. show how important hearing can be for learning

Today many people say that women have the same chance as men in society. But this was not always so. In the past, women all over the world had to fight to get the same chance as men in education and jobs. Many people said that women should not receive much education because they would not do as well as men when they went to work.
One woman who showed that women should have the same chance was Marie, a scientist. In the 1800s scientists knew that a metal, uranium, gave off radiation. They also knew how much radiation came from his element. But they didn’t know what this radiation was like; they wondered why and how uranium gave off radiation. Marie Curie set out to answer these questions. In one of her experiments she was studying a certain material which, she knew, contained uranium, But it gave off 4 times as much radiation as usually does. What could explain this fact? Marie Curie thought that there must be another source of radiation in this material.
In 1898 Marie Curie set out to find out this new source of radiation, which she named “radium”. Her husband, who was also a scientist, helped her. They set up a laboratory in an old building behind a school. For four years Curies searched, doing many experiments, And one morning in 1902 Marie found the source of the radiation.
Marie Curie proved to the world that there was element that gave off radiation. And she also proved to the world that, if women are given truly equal chance, they can really help society.
1.The scientists of Marie Curie’s day knew .
A.that uranium gave off radiation
B.that radium gave off radiation
C.that there was some radium in uranium
D.that uranium and radium both gave off radiation
2.The Curies found the element radium .
