One year our family decided to have a special celebration of Mother’s Day, as a token of appreciations for all the sacrifices that Mother had made for us. After breakfast we had arranged, as a surprise, to hire a car and take her for a beautiful drive in the country. Mother was rarely able to have a treat like that, because she was busy in the house nearly all the time.
But on the very morning of the day, we changed the plan a little, because it occurred to Father that it would be even better to take Mother fishing. As the car was hired and paid for, we might as well use it to drive up into the hills where the streams are. As Father said, if you just go driving without object, you have a sense of aimlessness, but if you are going to fish there is a definite purpose that heightens the enjoyment.
So we all felt it would be nicer for Mother to have a definite purpose . Father had just got a fishing rod the day before, which he said mother could use if she wanted to. Only Mother said she would much rather watch him fish than try to fish herself.
So we got her to make up a sandwich lunch in case we got hungry, though we were to come home again to a big festive dinner.
Well, when the car came to the door, it turned out that there was not as much space in it as we had supposed. It was plain that we couldn’t all get in.
Father said that he could just stay home and put in the time working in the garden. He said that there was a lot of rough dirty work that he could do, like digging a trench for the garbage, which would save hiring a man, and so he said that he’d stay home; he said that we were not to let the fact that he had not had a real holiday for three years stand in our way. He wanted us to go right ahead and not to mind him.
But of course we all felt that it would never do to let Father stay home, especially as we knew he would make trouble if he did. The two girls, Anne and Mary, would have stayed and helped the maid get dinner, only it seemed such a pity, for the two girls were eager to show their new hats on a lovely day like this. But they said that Mother had only to say the word and they’d gladly stay home and work. Will and I would have dropped out, but unfortunately we wouldn’t have been any use in preparing the dinner.
1.The author’s family decided to celebrate Mother’s Day specially to _______.
A. show love for their mother
B. show gratitude to their mother
C. show respect for their mother
D. to make up for a previous appointment
2.According to Paragraph 2, we know that the plan was changed because________.
A. Father proposed to go fishing out
B. we thought that driving out is boring
C. we failed to hire a car to go out
D. the car was not big enough
3.What problem did we find when the car arrived?
A. The car was too old to drive on mountain roads.
B. The car was larger than we expected.
C. The car was too small to accommodate us all.
D. The car was too plain looking.
4.Why didn’t the author drop out of the activity?
A. Because his sisters didn’t join in.
B. Because he needed to have dinner.
C. Because he couldn’t cook the dinner.
D. Because he hadn’t had a real holiday for three years.
5.Which of the following proverbs describes the text best?
A. Everything comes to him who waits.
B. Changes always go beyond plans.

If you look on the Internet, you will see that almost every day of the year celebrates some kind of food. These “holidays” have become very popular across the United States. They give people a chance to enjoy something they might not eat normally, like National Onion (洋葱) Ring Day, for example. Food holidays also give restaurants and other businesses a chance to promote their products.
But where did these American “holidays” come from? Many are the invention of an Alabama man, John-Bryan Hopkins. He writes about food for his Foodimentary. com website. Hopkins told Time magazine that when he began his site in 2006, there were only 175 “holidays.” “I filled in the rest,” he said.
The National Day Calendar has a list of all the different food and non-food related “holidays.” In the past, the website used to let anyone create their own day—for a price. But now, the site only accepts requests from businesses and other organizations.
While some food “holidays” are indeed made-up, many have historical roots. For example, National Beer Day on April 7 marks the end of a U. S. ban on the production, transport, import and sale of alcoholic drinks. The ban lasted from 1920 until 1933.
The Salvation Army, a Christian group, launched U. S. National Doughnut Day on June 1, 1938. It was meant to honor women who served soldiers doughnuts during World War I.
But not everyone likes food holidays. Bethany Jean Clement is a food writer for the Seattle Times newspaper. She wrote, “I get that some people might be excited by, say, National Doughnut Day. But you really can have a doughnut any day you want!”
Tavi Juarez, also of Foodimentary. com, thinks national food holidays are here to stay. She told the Seattle Times, “In my modest opinion, I believe that food holidays will continue to grow in popularity online because there’s a lot of negativity (消极) out there. Why not choose to celebrate food instead?”
1.Why does the website accept others’ own day?
A. To promote traditional food. B. To make money.
C. To create new holidays. D. To attract more viewers.
2.What is National Beer Day related to?
A. Law. B. War.
C. Right. D. Custom.
3.Who dislikes food holidays?
A. John-Bryan Hopkins. B. The Salvation Army.
C. Bethany Jean Clement. D. Tavi Juarez.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Good Chances to Enjoy Particular Foods.
B. Traditional American Foods on the Internet.
C. Tricks of Businesses: Promotion of Products.
D. National Food Days: An American Tradition.

Ever since you were born, you’ve probably celebrated the anniversary of that day once each year. Would you believe that some people actually celebrate TWICE each year? Not only do they celebrate the anniversary of the day they were born, they also celebrate six months later on their half birthday!
First let’s take a look at how half birthdays are calculated. The first --- and earliest --- is simply to keep the same number of the birth date and add six months to it. For example, if your birthday is January 13, then your half birthday would be on July 13.
Of course, this easy method doesn’t always work, because not all months have the same number of days. For example, an August 30 birthday would become February 30 --- a day that doesn’t exist!
If you want to be really precise, you need to add half the number of days in a year to your birth date. For example, in a normal year, this means adding 182.5 days. In a leap year, you would add 183 days. If this sounds too complicated, don’t worry. There are plenty of websites that will do the work for you!
For starters, consider kids. As they grow, six months can mean huge milestones. It can be a special time to celebrate with them as they grow up, because they grow up all too fast!
Half birthday celebrations can also be great for those people whose regular birthday might be overshadowed by a nearby holiday, such as Christmas. Likewise, kids whose birthdays fall in the summer might enjoy celebrating their half birthday, so that they can share their joy with their friends at school.
Half birthdays aren’t the only special “birthdays” that some people celebrate, though. Adopted children sometimes celebrate both their actual birthday (the day they were actually born) and the day they were adopted. Do you have any other special “birthdays” that you and your family celebrate?
1.The author’s purpose of writing this passage is mainly to tell us ________.
A. what birthday means
B. what half birthday is
C. the kinds of birthdays
D. the history of birthday
2.The author shows us how to calculate half birthdays by ________.
A. offering some practical examples
B. making a list of different numbers
C. comparing a normal year and a leap one
D. telling the difference between birthdays and half birthdays
3.Who are most likely to celebrate half birthdays?
A. People who are not young any longer.
B. People whose half birthday falls in summer.
C. People whose birthday falls near a holiday.
D. People who don’t like their birthdays at all.
4.This passage is taken from a website; which section does it belong to?
A. Science. B. Politics.
C. Hobby. D. Culture.

Sure, flowers can always brighten Mother’s Day and a dinner out is always appreciated. However, doesn’t she deserve something more personal or something that lasts longer than an evening?
I’m talking about the gift of fitness. Improved fitness is a gift that is invaluable to everyone. When you give a woman the gift of fitness, you are helping her open her door to better health. All moms would find these benefits extremely great. If they are like most of us, they have probably even mentioned how they would like to drop a few pounds or just get in better shape. In fact, experts say that about 62% of Americans are currently on a diet. By giving the gift of fitness, you are helping provide your mom with extra motivation.
